Purpose: Provides legal and immigration services to provide low-cost (and in some cases free) legal advice and representation to individuals who cannot afford private lawyers for their immigration matters. Criminal Defense Clinic Represents Dallas County citizens who are charged with criminal offenses and at risk of incarceration. It works with the Dallas Public Defender`s Office and provides students with experience in criminal trials. The Federal Taxpayers Clinic was the first tax clinic in the country to have the authority to represent clients before the Internal Revenue Service and the U.S. Treasury Court. The clinic is appointed by juvenile district judges to serve as a guardian/lawyer ad litem. Interdisciplinary lectures given by psychologists, forensic detectives, child development specialists and social workers are an essential part of this clinic. The consumer advocacy project, facilitated by a grant from the Texas Attorney General`s Office, targets the local bilingual Hispanic community and helps resolve consumer complaints through formal litigation, with a focus on informal defense, negotiation and mediation strategies, and community building.
